Hey guys! Haven't been blogging as religiously as I should, but I promise I have some stuff prepared! I just need to find the time to snap some pictures, hopefully by this weekend...?
Anyhow, I've seen a recent spike in waffle pictures all over my Instagram and I just had to do what any normal human being would do - I caved and got me some waffles. To be honest, my experience with waffles has always been pretty sub-par - mainly my after school escapades to the nearby Waffletown for Raspberry Ripple and (possibly) microwaved waffles. Which has it's beauty I guess, $3.50 for waffles and ice cream is always a good thing. But gourmet waffles, that's another story altogether. Over the past 2 weeks, I popped over to 2 different Waffle Cafés - Creamier and Stateland Café, so here's a quick review on them!
I've always wanted to visit Creamier, maybe even for more than a year? Sadly, it's located at Toa Payoh and hidden among the blocks of flats (i.e super out of the way) and I never went down. But after seeing one too many pictures of their ridiculously huge scoops of ice cream on top of fluffy waffles, I broke. I bugged Samuel to take me there, and so after a hearty dinner at Toa Payoh Central's Tim Ho Wan we had a leisurely stroll over.
Creamier specialises in unique ice cream flavours - Chocolate Orange, Sea Salt Gula Melaka and Black Sesame among others.
We had a double scoop of Sea Salt Gula Melaka and Earl Grey Lavender. It was super packed (Sunday night!) but we managed to get a seat quite quickly. Waiting time wasn't too bad either, and definitely worth it when we got our warm, fluffy waffles! Plus look at how generous their scoops are! We definitely enjoyed the Earl Grey more than the Gula Melaka as the latter got a bit jerlat towards the end - but then again we do seem to enjoy most tea flavoured ice cream flavours! Dis baby was about $10 - so worth it!
I have to say their ice cream is really good, and as the name suggests, very creamy! But not sure if that's enough to make me travel all the way down just for another bite... Maybe?
The following week we popped over to Stateland Cafe, which I read about online! Was intrigued because they had really special waffle flavours - Red Velvet, Black Forest, S'mores and more. Plus, they're located at Bali Lane, and Sam and I hang out around Bugis Street a lot so it was pretty convenient!
We decided to go with the Red Velvet Waffle with Cream Cheese Glaze and Vanilla Ice Cream - $14.90
Should we just cut to the chase? I was very disappointed by Stateland. The outlet was very, very small and we had to wait about 20 minutes for a seat, but that was forgivable, seeing how they're a new shop. I waited about another 20-30 minutes for my waffles, while the group that was seated just before me came, ate and left. Hmmmmmmmm... And finally the waffles came. They were sadly lacklustre - flat, tasteless, and not enough ice cream. Not fluffy at all, and it wasn't even hot :( At least it made for a pretty Instagram picture!
The shop serves a multitude of dishes - all day breakfast, pasta, waffles, French toast... Which is great, except the kitchen is about half the size of a public toilet stall! In my opinion it's better to focus on a few dishes and perfect them, but hey, they're the owners! Sadly, I don't think I'll be going back too soon.
Ok! That was my 2 cents worth on 2 popular waffle joints - what do you think?
